Area Features

To complement the vibrancy of the downtown area, South Bend also hosts an array of places and spaces for the outdoor enthusiast. From the long, winding river that gave South Bend its name to beautiful county parks, there is much to experience outdoors in South Bend.

The St. Joseph River not only sets a beautiful picture for scenery in South Bend, but serves as an excellent river to fish for trout and salmon. The lengthy river is also used for canoeing and kayaking. For the more adventurous, located in the heart of downtown South Bend, lies the East Race Waterway. The East Race Waterway is the first man-made whitewater course in North America with Colordao River-like rapids and waves that can reach heights of up to six feet. The water level and whitewater turbulence can actually be manipulated with controls. Whitewater rafting offers a unique experience for both inexperienced and experienced people. It also offers an excellent opportunity for a teambuilding event! For those less likely to get out on the water, there are miles and miles of paved walking and running paths that lie adjacent to the river--perfect for bicycling, running or walking.

Beyond the St. Joseph River, South Bend also hosts a wide range of city- and county-owned parks. Each park features unique amenities that include disc golf, skating rinks, volleyball courts, restroom facilities, tennis courts, playgrounds, pavilions, softball fields and more.
